KINEMA + RIVER OF ART present:

What drives us to create – and what happens when art becomes inseparable from life?

FOUR FEATURE FILMS | FOUR FILMS for $40.00
w/ the River of Art FESTIVAL PASS (or usual individual ticket price), multiple screenings offered over 10 days.

This specially selected film program takes us into the lives and worlds of musicians, visual artists, sculptors and creative collaborators. From the competing egos of four virtuoso musicians and Yayoi Kusama’s extraordinary determination to make her mark on the art world, to an Icelandic artist navigating family and relationships, and the irreverent creative force behind one of Australia’s most distinctive art-school bands.

Together, the four films explore ambition, collaboration, identity, relationships and the compulsion to create – a celebration of the many different ways art is made and lived.

KUSAMA – INFINITY
Visual Art · Sculpture · Installation · Fashion
An intimate portrait of Yayoi Kusama and the extraordinary persistence behind one of contemporary art’s most recognisable careers. From conservative rural Japan to the New York art world, the film reveals an artist driven by an unwavering need to create – and to be seen.

THE MUSICIANS
Music · Performance · Collaboration
A witty French comedy about four virtuoso musicians brought together to perform on a priceless quartet of Stradivarius instruments. There’s just one problem: they can’t stand each other. A playful look at artistic ego, collaboration and the challenge of creating something extraordinary together.

THE LOVE THAT REMAINS
Art · Sculpture · Life
Against the spectacular Icelandic landscape, artist Anna and fisherman Magnús navigate the slow unravelling of their marriage. Beautiful, funny and quietly unconventional, the film explores creativity alongside family, love and the everyday realities of an artist’s life.

LIVE IT UP: THE MENTAL AS ANYTHING STORY
Music · Visual Art · Australian Culture
More than a story about a band. Mental as Anything emerged from art school with music, painting, design and an unmistakably Australian sense of humour all part of the mix. Warm, funny and moving, Live It Up celebrates the creative friendships and irreverent spirit behind one of Australia’s most distinctive cultural forces.

More information

River of Art is delighted to bring moving image and digital screen art into the 2026 Festival through a new collaboration with Far South Film Inc and the Kinema. It’s an art form we’ve long wanted to bring more fully into the Festival, and Continuous Present creates an exciting new platform for South East NSW filmmakers and screen artists to share their work with our audiences.

Our sincere thanks to the Kinema’s new owners, Kristy Randall and Alex Padovan, for opening the doors of this much-loved cultural venue to the Festival and embracing the collaboration with such enthusiasm, and to Hiromi Matsuoka, Murray Van der Veer of Far South Film Inc and their Filmmakers for bringing their screen expertise, regional knowledge and creative energy to the project. This first-time partnership brings together three organisations with a shared commitment to regional creativity, connection and opportunity – and marks the beginning of a collaboration River of Art has been keen to see happen for some time.

About Far South Film Inc
Far South Film Inc is an association formed in 2019 of filmmakers and other screen creators based in regional South East NSW. A grassroots industry organisation, it creates networking and professional development opportunities for the screen community; fosters, promotes & advocates for regional screen projects through skill- and resource sharing in a region that is sparsely populated and removed from city film resources. The Far South Film Festival is our major annual project. Far South Film continues to raise the profile of our region with major industry players, encouraging them to employ local filmmakers on inbound film projects, projects for tourism and other regional businesses as well as collaborations with community artists and arts organisations.
