Sally Stevens is an Australian fibre artist whose practice explores the intersection of crochet, sculpture and wearable art. With more than 28 years of crochet experience, beginning at the age of eight, Sally has developed an intuitive, freeform approach that rejects traditional patterns in favour of texture, movement and experimentation. Working primarily with reclaimed and repurposed materials including thrifted yarns, recycled wedding dresses, discarded textiles, rope, raffia, plastics, beads and found coastal elements, she transforms overlooked materials into sculptural works that speak to memory, connection, fragility and self-discovery. Her visual language is deeply influenced by the Australian coast, particularly the rhythms, textures and organic forms of the ocean and tide line.
Sally’s practice has gained recognition through exhibitions, competitions and wearable art, including being a finalist in the 2025 River of Art, Mixed Media Champion at Canberra Royal, and a finalist in the 2026 Australian Wearable Art Festival with *She Who Inherits the Sea*, a large-scale sculptural work exploring inheritance, guardianship and humanity’s relationship with the ocean. She has also exhibited through Interwoven8, Locals Salon and Sculpture in the Valley, and is an active member of the Crochet Guild of Australia and Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group. Rooted in a philosophy of reuse and creative resourcefulness, Sally continues to push the boundaries of crochet beyond its traditional domestic associations, demonstrating its potential as a contemporary sculptural and fine-art medium.
